The photo above shows the Chimney stack after removal of bricks to lower it and has been capped off.
Why lower and remove only part of the Chimney?
Lowering the chimney and capping it off means that it is made safe and prevents any further damage to your roof or property that may have been caused by leaks and gaps in the brickwork or cap. Lowering the chimney is a quicker and more simple job than removing the whole Chimney.
Why didn’t we remove the whole chimney?
Removing the whole Chimney involves taking out the full chimney, chimney breast and the flue throughout the house, leaving a cavity where the Chimney used to be. Most chimneys are independently supported, however they may have been a structural part of the house and so may require structural reinforcements and supporting beams. Therefore it is typically a much bigger and more expensive job. It can create extra room in your home, so can be a wonderful way to create space, but will come at a greater cost.
